What it meant to be an engineer?
Being an engineer has given me the opportunity to explore many different parts of the world. Originally from Kuala Lumpur, and my work has brought me to Japan, Thailand, Singapore, China, Hong Kong, USA and last 15 years in Australia, starting in Adelaide, then Perth and now Melbourne.
During these times I experienced how different people approach problems at hand differently, some better than others, nevertheless every engineer is different.
Am I a good engineer
I like to think so …
… but in reality, I reckon I am rather typical. Typical in a sense that is expected from an engineer, when you pose me a problem I would resolve it. That’s what engineers do best, that’s what I do best … No IFs No BUTs and No EXCUSEs!
At times I received feedback from clients appreciating my effort and praises that I am good and excellent work. The truth is; I am only as good as my experience that has prepared me for the tasks and the team behind me. To put it simply, I was lucky to be put into many difficult situations that required me to resolve outside the box, at times perhaps I have seen the same problems solved differently. One thing that has helped me was the standards, guidelines, and manuals that I read, perhaps a little more than my counterparts. Ultimately, I believe it all boils down to the practical applications of what I have read and the years of hard yards at sites that have given me the additional insight into my experience.
I am grateful for being able to be in the same industry from day #1; giving me a little more experience than the average; hence I may be perceived as good to many clients and associates. I am grateful for having great mentors, especially my first manager Ir TT Tang, whom he once asked me “Young man, in 20 years do you want to be an engineer with 20-years experience or one with one year repeated 19 more times? ” This has been my guiding principle since.
My core competencies
HVAC system designs
I am conversant in many facets of HVAC designs, from simple split systems to central chilled water systems and everything in between.
My favourite systems design are indirect evaporative cooling and ground source heat pump systems.
Energy efficiency in HVAC systems is my passion. I am merely the custodian for my children, their friends, and future generations.
Contrary to common believe energy efficiency is not necessarily more expensive. It’s knowing the appropriate system for the application.
I have spent many years as a site engineer and later as project manager for building services. I have seen good works as well as the dodgy ones. These experience serve me well today.
Quality workmanship triumph over bad in terms of time, cost and reputation every time.
How may I help
After more than 30 years in the construction industry building services, I may be some help to you, especially if you are stuck with problems that many have tried but remained unresolved.
Or you wish to save money on out of the box engineered performance solutions rather than ‘deemed to satisfy’ compliance.
